During an October 17 interview on Twitch.tv, Archbishop Georg Gänswein was asked whether the more liberal German Church could learn from growing interest in Catholicism among young people in France and the US. The interviewer specifically mentioned the “Mass according to old rites” as a possible reason for success there. Gänswein did not directly address the old Mass. Instead, he said young people are “searching for answers” and finding “nourishment” in the Gospel and the Church’s message. US Bishop prohibits celebration facing the Lord (ad orientem). On October 2, Bishop Jeffrey Walsh, 60, of Gaylord, Michigan, issued a decree restricting the celebration of the Mass towards the Lord. It takes effect on October 15. Under the new rules, all Sunday and holy day Masses must be read - like a talk or show - facing the people. On weekdays, no more than two Masses per parish may be celebrated ad orientem, and only after consultation with the parish council and appropriate catechesis. Weddings, funerals, and other Masses with congregations must also be celebrated facing the people. Masses according to the 1962 Missal are exempt. Entitled, "Do You Know Them to Be Worthy?", the file was written by Father Thomas V. Berg and psychologist Timothy G. Lock. The report draws on research commissioned from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) and a consultation held at Notre Dame in September 2025. The proposals concern psychological assessment, candidates with particular psychological or developmental conditions, and formation for chastity and celibacy. It addresses candidates with conditions including ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorder.
